How to Sync Your Menstrual Cycle with the Moon Cycle  E-mail
By Jing J.

sync-menstrual-cycle-with-moon-cycleAccording to our recent poll, 99% of women menstruated on the new moon in their last menstrual cycle. That’s 412 women out of the 423 women who participated in the poll. Looks like many of us are synchronizing our menstrual cycle with the moon cycle after all.

You’ve probably heard that in ancient times women menstruated together on the new moon and ovulated on the full moon. I’m delighted to know that the powerful connection between the moon cycle and the menstrual cycle is still very strong today.

Syncing your menstrual cycle with the moon cycle is wonderful in many ways. If you have an irregular period, it’ll help to regulate it. Moreover, it will help you to get in touch with your natural rhythms, and live your life in harmony and in flow.

Here are some tips I’ve learned on how to synchronize your menstrual cycle with the moon cycle…

1. Get up at the same time every day, no matter what time you go to bed.

2. Make your bedroom completely dark, free of any blinking or glowing light from your alarm clock, cell phone, or other electronic devices. I also close my curtains after dinner. So when I’m ready for bed, I’m not exposed to any artificial light in my bedroom.

3. Go outside and take a 20 to 30-minute walk every day without sunglasses. My new favorite routine is to sit under the sun and let the warm and gentle morning sunlight caress me while having my breakfast.

4. Sleep with a 100-watt light bulb next to your bed from day 14 to 17 of your cycle (around ovulation). Do this for 6 months. In one study of 2,000 women, more than 50% regulated their previously irregular periods to a regular cycle of 29 days by using this method.

5. Use full-spectrum light bulbs (2,500 to 10,000 lux) at home. Expose yourself to ambient full-spectrum light for half an hour to an hour every evening or every morning. This is also a great way to help alleviate depressed moods, especially during the winter months.

It's portoble and it provides soothing, glare-free light.

6. Swallow the moon energy around the full moon. Simply face the moon when it’s just rising and gently breathe in the lunar energy, swallowing it. It’s recommended that you do this 30 times. And the best time is from the new moon until five days after the full moon, when the lunar energy is most powerful.

7. Track your menstrual cycles. Cycle Harmony’s free Period Calendar allows you to track your menstrual cycles and identify the moon phase during each day of your cycle.

8. Create your moon rituals around the new moon and the full moon. Honoring the moon cycle and your menstrual cycle can be as simple as lighting a candle.

Cycle Harmony member Vild shared her experience, which I think is really beautiful. She said, “My favorite one is when I can see the full moon – I go outside and sit on the ground. I bathe myself in the moon rays and sing with the moon. I concentrate on the connection between the moon and myself, and feel how purifying and strengthening this link is. These moon celebrations leave me feeling whole, and fill me up until the next one.”

I practice Natural Family Planning and using the lightbulb is recommended in that method as well to regulate your period. I haven't used it yet, but maybe I will now.

@ Kaara, I used to menstruate on the full moon as well. A couple of years ago I was contemplating on the new moon menstruation. Then I had two periods within a cycle and my cycle was adjusted to new moon somehow. Quite interesting. Check out my experience: cycleharmony.com/.../...

Jena, I'm interested in hearing your experience after you try it. I always have regular periods so I have not yet tried the lightbulb :-)

Srividya, I suggest you try the light therapy: sleeping with a 100-watt light bulb next to your bed from day 14 to 17 of your cycle (around ovulation). For resources, check out www.sunlightsciences.com.

Emotional stress, diet, exercise, sleep and other lifestyle factors can also cause our menstrual cycles to become irregular. I encourage you to look into those areas of your life as well.

I realized at the beginning of the year how out of sink my cycle was with the moon. So since I can't always see the moon or have a completely dark room, I thought to put a moon phase webpage as my homepage at work and looked at it every day. I became very aware of where the moon was and what sign it was in. I noticed that almost immediately my period has been 28 days for almost every single months since then, where in the past three years that had only happened twice! I'm very grateful to see more ways to align my cycle to the moon and create more harmony in my life!
Love to all our wombs and ovaries to once again be fertile and harmonious!

Hi everyone
I keep posting this same post in a number of places on this website but it keeps disappearing.... I was told to put the light on during the full moon regardless of when you ovulate... I ovulate during the balsamic moon (a couple of days before the new moon) so the sky is very dark. If I were to put a light on during this time wouldn't it be artificial... I am trying to sync up with the moon to regulate my cycle so I really want this clarified... My plan is to link my lunar fertility time with my mid cycle ovulation time (balsamic moon) so if anyone knows when I should put the light on it would help me so much. Nadia from menstruation.com.au told me it would be dangerous to put the light on during the balsamic moon so you can understand how confused I am. Help??

Carmody, this article is shown in a couple of categories. Your previous comment was shown in a different category. And I responded to your comment as follows:

Carmody, you asked a very interesting questions! My intuition is saying to follow the moon by spending some time outdoor and set your intention to sync your cycle with the moon. I was able to adjust my own cycle with the power of intention. Follow your intuition, it will guide you - and will never steer you wrong :)

I cycle in spring and summer on the full and the new in the fall and winter. I never understood my irregular cycles intil I later learned the difference between the energies of the seasons and phases of the moon. It is still a tiresome time when the switch is happening but I belive it is due to my being atuned to the earth ,moon and all things in nature....any ideas from or thoughts from anyone.

I too switch my cycle from the new moon to the full moon, and back to the new moon every once a while. But mine doesn't seem to have a clear correspondence with the change of seasons. I'm also curious to understand why this change occurs. It's quite interesting...

I'm currently on the new moon cycle but would like to go back to my full-moon cycle.
I was with a friend over the weekend, and she really messed up my cycle. I fell into hers and had a 35 day cycle! It was awful!

Hi Jenny, it's normal to have white, creamy vaginal discharge around the time when you ovulate. Do you track your period with our free period tracker? Do you know on which days of your menstrual cycles you have the white, creamy discharge? Is the amount excessive? Does it have an odor?

Hi, I heard it's better to menstrate with the new moon and ovulate with the full moon when trying to concieve....I want to get pregnant but am currently menstrating with the full moon. I have been trying some of these tips, not sure how many months it should take to switch over? Would I have the light on when I ovulate now or when I want to ovulate? Truely interesting!

Becky, this is a really good question. Truly interesting, isn't it. For this reason, I prefer the daily exposure to full spectrum light every day. Have you tried the Happy Lite Sunshine Stimulator? amazon.com/.../...
