The Moon Cycle and The Menstrual Cycle  E-mail
By Jing J.

Have you ever paid attention to the moon cycle, and the magical relationship it has with your menstrual cycle? The moon cycle has 29.5 days, changing from the waxing new moon of increasing light, to the full moon of total illumination, to the dark waning moon of decreasing light, and back to the waxing new moon of increasing light again.

Month after month, the moon cycle mirrors a woman’s menstrual cycle, which coincidently has an average length of 29.5 days as well. And similar to the moon cycle, a woman’s menstrual cycle changes from the menstruation of new growth, to the ovulation of full power and blossom, to the pre-menstrual phase of harvest and degeneration, and back to menstruation of renewal again.

All life forms have cycles of birth, growth, death, and renewal that are mirrored in the progressive phases of the moon cycle. I think a better understanding of the moon cycle and its rhythms and energetic influences can help us better appreciate the rhythmic dance of our own menstrual cycles, to be in harmony with it rather than to be at odd with it.

So how’s your menstrual cycle in relation to the moon cycle? Do you menstruate on the new moon or on the full moon? What’s the moon phase when you ovulate?

I read that the natural cycle of women who live and sleep out in the open away from artificial light is to ovulate on the full moon and menstruate on the new moon. But this is not the case for most modern women whose natural rhythms are largely affected by artificial light.

Some women may menstruate on the crescent moon, some on the full moon, some on the waning moon, and others on the new moon. According to Dragontime by Luisa Francia, specific moon phase energies, when magnified by menstruation can be freed up and made available for use if we choose to work with them.

 waxing-moon-menstruation

Waxing moon represents new beginnings and growth. New ideas are being planted. New processes are coming into play. New experiences and events are within reach.

The energy of the waxing moon menstruation is inwards and self-nourishing. It’s time to think, to learn, to read, and to plan. During this time, you might be open to important learning, to receive knowledge, to set intentions, and to make new plans.

The goddess associated with the waxing moon is Persephone, a virgin goddess who walked the path to the underworld and was initiated into womanly bleeding. She’s the guardian of the crescent moon menstruation.

full-moon-menstruation

The full moon represents fire, abundance, power and vitality. It’s time to claim one’s own power, make decisions, work changes, and bring something into being.

The energy of full moon menstruation is outward, world-nourishing. Feasts and celebration go well with full moon bleeding. The transformational quality of the fire energy makes it an ideal time to learn to transform negative energies into positive ones: rage into creative action, belly cramps into sensuousness.

Ishtar, the Red Goddess of Babylon is the guardian of this menstrual fire.

waning-moon-menstruation

The waning moon represents maturity and harvest. It’s time for persistence, for making reality out of the visions and impulses.

The energy of waning moon bleeding is outward, world nourishing. It’s time to tend the blooms of the full moon energy, and to make your vision a reality. It takes persistence, patience, and hard work. But the harvest is within reach if you do.

The goddess of this time, Demeter, a mother goddess is responsible for the cycles of life on earth, letting the fruits and grains ripen for harvest, in preparation for the next cycle when she’ll withdraw to tend to her own nourishment, letting the earth become barren while she mourns for her daughter.

new-moon-menstruation

The new moon represents the dark and mysterious power of the deep. Existing structures have fulfilled their purposes, and need to be destructed, or reconstructed to make room for the new.

The energy of new moon bleeding is inwards, self-nourishing. During this time, anxieties, memories, and experiences may rise up, eager to be dealt with. It’s a good time to take stock, and to draw conclusions from them. New moon menstruation is a strong time of healing and renewal.

The goddess of this time is Hecate, the woman at the joining of three roads, the guardian of mysteries and knowledge, the reaper, the dark one, the crone.

What’s the moon phase of your menstruation? Does this information resonate with you? As far as I know, it’s not backed up by scientific studies, but rather, myths and traditions that have been passed on from generations to generations. My philosophy is to take what’s useful for you, and leave the rest.

I hope it’ll help you gain a better understanding of your own menstrual cycle and its rhythms, and develop a more harmonious relationship with it.

What do you recommend for me? I am suffering through a second period already this month due to stress and not getting it last month. I am depleted in estrogen and need a doctor's prescription for bioidentical hormones but do not have the money.

Vanessa, I just had an interview with Jason Moskovitz, a licensed acupuncturist who's dealt with a lot of PMS related issues at the Tao of Wellness in Santa Monica. I brought up your question in the interview. He said that stress is really the main factor that causes erratic and irregular cycles. The first thing to do is to take some time out, and take good care of yourself, whether it's better sleep or exercise. I know it can be difficult to take time out while dealing with stressful events in life, but I think your body is telling you that it may have been overtaxed and needs to be nourished and replenished. Secondly, certain foods are rich in estrogen, such as tofu and any number of beans. They are a cost-effective way to replenish the estrogen your body needs. I hope this is helpful. As my interview with Jason indicates, there are very affordable and achievable ways to deal with this issue. If there is anything I can do, please let me know. And keep me posted.

The thing is I have a chronic condition of fatigue and insomnia and am on antidepressants . I need estrogen soon so I can get the rest from both symptoms a.s.a.p. Should I eat a lot of yams....and spinach for the iron?

You don't need estrogen. It would seem you don't have enough progesterone to balance and counter the estrogen. All women are saturated with toxic estrogen from chemicals in the air, food, most synthetic materials, hormones in meat, dairy. Your need to detox your liver, take a b-complex vitamin and get some exercise. Get a complete allergy blood test for foods.

My daughter and I got our period at the same day this month and it's been 8 day's of extreme and much to long bleedings. We both had the same thought.. Is there something wrong with the moon? Normally we have our period for about 5 days..never 8 days or longer.

That's so interesting Morrighan. Our cycles are definitely affected by the moon. "What's going on with you, Moon?"is an interesting question to ask. Let me know what you find :-)

I have only recently started to be aware of the moon cycles and their alignment with my periods (along with many other spiritual themes). For two months in a row I had my period come at or almost at full moon. Your article has been very helpful to understand these natural correlations.

Thank you for sharing Yani. My cycles seem to vary, sometimes on new moon, sometimes on full moon, and sometimes on waxing and waning moons. They're somehow different. I feel differently energetically. It's so wonderful to hear that you're connecting your cycles with the moon cycles.

I began reading about the moon cycles and their effects on us over a year ago (I am a student midwife, and have found that babies like to be born around the full moon). Since I started researching, I menstruate on the new moon, ovulate on the full moon (it took about 2 months to adjust that). This month, I was 13 days late. I'm not pregnant. I started menstruation today...the full moon. Is there some kind of reasoning to this? Why would I be so regular and then be that late?

Jing 16:07:2011 10:12 AM PST
Carrissa, your experience is fascinating! I had a similar experience. For a while I menstruated around full moons and ovulated on new moons. I've read in ancient times women menstruated on new moons and ovulated on full moons. Then in one cycle, I had two periods in one month (I have always been very regular), and my cycle was adjusted to menstruation on new moons and ovulation on full moons. What's interesting is that after a couple of cycles, my periods went back to menstruation on full moons and ovulation on new moons. I'm wondering if your body is doing some kind of adjustment to your cycle. Let me know how it goes. This is absolutely fascinating!

it does match me, my period begins 1 or 2 days before the new moon, and it lasts about 6/7 days. I'm 20, and it was never regular, but since i moved on the country-side, about 1 year ago, it changed.

This is a great article. The link between the moon and a woman's menstrual cycle has really interested me over the last year or so. I've always tended to have my period with the full moon and ovulate with the new moon.

@Sparkle, your move to the countryside and it's affect on your periods is fascinating. Yet more evidence of how artificial light affects us! I bet where you live you do not have a lot of artificial light in the shape of street lights do you? If so, that's probably why your body has gone back to the natural rhythms of ovulating with the full moon and having your period with the new moon.

For anyone who hasn't read them yet, I would highly recommend both the Optimized Woman and Red Moon by Miranda Gray. They have both helped me understand my cycle more and how I can take advantage of the different energies we experience throughout our cycle.

Take care, Laura x

Obviously these differing cycles are hard enough for ladies to understand and deal with but please spare a thought for men. Please appreciate that your complexity is often baffling to us. Such an important issue is almost a taboo topic in our culture. Unfortunately most of us are out of step with the cycles of the natural world. Ladies, celebrate the life force that is your essence and educate your males to understand and appreciate you more.

Ross, your response means a lot to me. It's nice to hear from a male who is open and willing to understand and support our complexity, and the ebbs and flows of our moods and cycles. I do hope there will be more open dialogue between the two genders!

I live in a remote part of Indonesia and sleep in a room with no walls. There is no artificial light from houses, and we go to bed around 3 hours after the sun has set. I am always aware of the phase of the moon and my cycle is exactly self-set to ovulate with the full moon and bleed with the new moon. Each year we return to Australia for a couple of months and as soon as I go to sleeping indoors my cycle is disrupted. When returning to open air sleeping my cycle will adjust a few days each month to get back to the moon cycle. It is absolutely fascinating, and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to witness this connection.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience Sally! I've learned that in ancient times women menstruated on new moon and ovulated on full moon. But I've not heard from anyone personally who follow the exact moon cycles. It's so nice to hear that your personal experience has proved it true!

I'm very happy to have come across this site! I always felt there was more meaning behind the cycles though I have not put as much research into this until recently. I found this even more interesting to come across today as it's the New Moon so here we go right on schedule! Day one of my cycle :) My roommate on the other hand is on a contraceptive shot (can't remember the name...Depo?) which prevents her from having a cycle. She feels her cycle is a major inconvenience in her life and can't understand how I find anything fascinating or "magical" about the phases. As painful as they may admittedly be at times, I feel spiritually renewed after the cycle and feel empowered by the ebb and flow of the sacred feminine throughout the process each month. I feel sad that my roommate is missing the experience by choice and feel it's a side effect of growing up during times when the feminine energy isn't respected. It's a pity.

Anyhow, in reference to ancient times cycles I happen to work in a place with large windows and plenty of natural light coming in so my cycle is also set to ovulate with the Full Moon and bleed with the New Moon. It is truly fascinating and I enjoy pondering the magnitude of the lunar connection and beyond... :)

It's comforting to know that it's still possible to sync with the moon cycles in our modern lives! And I'm so delighted to hear that you're following your own intuition and your inner light that's always guiding you. Much love and blessings to you!

What a wonderful Website! I just recently put it together that I am menstruating on a full moon. I recently moved from about 6000 feet above sea level (where I had lighter periods and less cramping) to about 1800 feet above sea level and I am overcome with the goings on of my body. My breasts are larger and more tender, cramps more intense and heavier bleeding, and in general more anxiety. I wonder if the higher altitude squeezed me in and kept things light, or if the full moon is rising my tides internally? Just an observation. Are there foods I can eat to help with any of this? Thanks again for the great website.

Lulu, thanks for sharing your experience. So interesting! I imagine the difference in altitude would have a big impact on our bodies. The atmosphere pressure is so much higher at the sea level. The impact of tides would also be stronger. It's interesting to see how soon your body will adjust to this change. As to foods, check out this list based on the Tao of Nutrition: cycleharmony.com/.../...

In the past 6 months my menstruating has synced with the full moon. The initial cramps are very intense and painful. It generally passes by the next day. I relax with chamomile tea, and lavender heat pillow, as well as gentle yoga postures recommended. Is there anything else you could recommend to relieve the initial intense pain, it does make me feel awfully unwell. Thankyou, Rebecca.

Hello all... I'm 35, have been mensruating for 24 years and have tracked my mense with the lunar phase for most of those years! My 'normal' is ovulation during the late waxing moon, 'implantation' on the full moon with menstruation on the new moon. My children were both born on full moons as well.

I have been mentsruating on the new moon for months maybe a year now. This past new moon I didn't bleed. I thought I may be pregnant. I took a pregnancy test from the drug store and it showed I am not pregnant. I am going to test again in 3 days. I am anticipating my period on the full moon as my cycle has changed from a full moon bleeding cycle to a new moon bleeding cycle in the past. What are some natural ways of being sure of pregnancy in its early stages? What does it mean for a women's menstrual cycle to change from bleeding on the new moon to bleeding on the full moon? Also, please make note that I've was taking an herbal supplement pueraria mirifica that contains estrogen for health, beauty and longevity.

Just for my own info I have been marking in my calander when my wife's cycle is, and for a few years felt confused because I could never find a pattern. A couple of months ago I took note it was a full moon as I was marking her in my calander when it hit me. I brought up a moon phase calander and looked at when the previous full moon was and compared it to my own calander and BAM! There she was, looked up, again the previous full moon, and of course, ta-da! I feel so stupid for never realizing this before, because I was trying to find a pattern in our synthetic contemporary calander when really the moon has been looking me in the face the whole time. Interestingly enough when I brought this up to my wife, this was new to her as well!!!!
I feel we have awakened to a whole new (actually old, hahaha) world!!!!!!!

Hi Jing,

I'm fascinated by this also and would love your perspective on an issue. I'm 44, in a LT relationship and am currently exploring the concept of natural contraception... giving my body a break from the pill feels so good. However, I'm confused... From what I've read, natural contraception seems to rely on a 28 day cycle, which I had, up until a few months ago. At the moment it's a bit more all over the place. If irregularity is the norm... As we adjust more to moon cycles ... Is it actually possible to use 'natural contraception' reliably?

I had been menstruating with the new moon until this month. Last month it was three days after the new moon. This month it has been nine days after and it still has not begun. Pregnancy is not a possibility. But recently I have started being a caretaker and staying near a prison with a LOT of light. I am used to living in the country, very secluded, with no lights near. Already felt as if the recent changes in life were influencing my cycle and now it's even clearer as to why! Thank you so much for sharing this insight. My energy is shifting from introversion to extroversion, from helping myself to now helping others. Also living in more light, so now I am coming closer to the full moon.
What clarification. Bless you and All!

I have started to menstruate with the cycles of the moon these last few months. The reason for my bleeding to regulate with the moon phases, is I think because I have been much more in tune with the natural world, and my bond with it is increasing.
I bleed during the new moon or a day after the new moon. It is interesting to pay attention to the energies during my phases. Last time was very difficult though, I was 9 days late, and my PMS got really severe. Might have been because of too much partying (alcohol & tobacco) with my friends among other things last month that made me unbalanced. I hope that it wont happen again, I bought some Motherwort tincture that might help to regulate it so that I will bleed no later than the day after the new moon.

It's indeed enlightening to observe the intimate connection between our menses and the foods we eat, our emotions, stress in life, and the moon cycles. I believe it's a blessing that we have our menstrual cycles because they teach us so much about ourselves and remind us to live in balance and harmony...

Hi, I have ALWAYS had my period on the new moon, I just finished BF my 3rd baby and right on schedule I got my 1st period after ovulating first( last full moon) I have always noticed and been fascinated by the moon, I told Mum it was my friend as a kid and I would consider myself to be a spiritual person. Only when I started tracking my periods did I realise just how in sync I am, I DO believe we should hold on to our links to the unknown and to the deeper significance it may hold :-)

I have come into menopause and I keep track of the full moon and new moon cycles because PRO and Flax seed oil help with my hormonal changes. I'm finding it very helpful but at the same time I could use a little more help with the hot flashes.

Rose, have you heard of Enzymatic Therapy Remifemin. It seems quite effective with the hot flashes and has got pretty good reviews. Check it out: amazon.com/.../...

I was feeling very extreme tonight and snuck outside to smoke. Mind you I don't smoke but something was pulling me outside into the night. The moon is full and I just started my period. I am an Aries which is a fire sign and I am a true Aries. Very intense. I apologized for being mean to someone today I intended to keep as my enemy because I felt they betrayed me. Somehow it all released today no matter how much I wanted to stay angry. Balance and peacefulness came over me.

many thanks, such a wonderful article, i have just come into synch with the new moon and am receiving the benefits of cleansing and insight as you suggest

also, it feels good to take a pause and resting space at the time of dark moon - i feel blessed to be connected and the info on the goddesses gives another source of support and means of consciously making this time even more sacred

blessings of health and harmony

Jennifer, I'm glad you like my article, and you're deepening your relationship with the moon cycle. In the last menstrual cycle I got caught up with a lot of work-related stress and didn't give myself time and space to connect with the moon. And I totally felt it. Need to reconnect in this cycle. Thanks for reminding me sister!
